Bates returns with expanded role

The Coventry Blaze are pleased to confirm that Coltyn Bates will return to the club for his second season, taking on the expanded roles of Associate Coach and Associate Director of Hockey Operations.

Bates joined the Blaze after three successful seasons in coaching and management positions with the Winkler Flyers of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL).

He began his coaching career in 2022 as the Flyers’ Assistant General Manager and Assistant Coach. In 2024, he stepped into the role of Interim Head Coach and General Manager before being appointed Assistant General Manager while also assuming the position of Associate Coach.

Originally from Brandon, Manitoba, Bates transitioned into coaching following a productive playing career. He recorded 145 points (47 goals, 98 assists) in 169 junior games before earning a scholarship to the University of Wisconsin–Superior (NCAA Division III). Across four NCAA seasons, he appeared in 88 games, tallying 47 points (20 goals, 27 assists), and helped the Yellowjackets capture the WIAC Championship during the 2020/21 season.

Bates commented:

“I couldn’t be more excited to be back in Coventry for another season. After meeting all the great people within the organisation, it was an easy decision to return. Seeing the players we’ve signed this summer is really exciting, and after getting to know our fans and sponsors last season, I’m looking forward to spending another year with the Blaze.”

Head Coach Kevin Moore said:

“We are thrilled to welcome Coltyn back for his second season. Since joining the club, he has been instrumental in every aspect of our hockey operations. His work ethic, enthusiasm, communication skills, and professionalism stand out every single day. I am incredibly grateful to work alongside him as we continue building on the cohesion, we established last season. This promotion to Associate Coach and Associate Director of Hockey Operations are thoroughly deserved”
