The DPD Coventry Blaze fell to a heavy 6-0 defeat to Sheffield Steelers at Utilita Arena on Saturday to open their 2026/27 Challenge Cup campaign.
The first big opportunity for the Blaze came through Ryan Richardson, who found himself with a close-range attempt, only to be denied by Sheffield netminder Matt Greenfield. There were a number of close deflections at both ends of the ice during the opening five minutes as the game settled into a physical and competitive rhythm. Following a good face-off win by Tanner Kaspick, William Boysen was found alone at the front of the net and attempted to get the puck underneath Greenfield, but the Sheffield netminder was equal to the effort. The play was followed by a number of scuffles between the two sides. Less than 10 minutes into the game, Sheffield appeared to take the lead. After consultation, the officials eventually ruled the goal out. Sheffield didn't have to wait much longer for their opener, however, as Ivan Bjorkly Nordstrom received a backdoor pass from Evan Jasper and finished to give the visitors the lead. Kaspick was then handed a two-minute penalty for interference as Sheffield looked to build on their advantage. The Steelers added a second on the resulting powerplay, with Olivier Archambault finishing a well worked move at 16:14. Sheffield eventually found a third at 18:27. Dowd finished from right in front of the net following a well-worked play, giving the hosts a 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission. Within a minute of the restart, Sheffield extended their lead to four. Mikko Juusola was found in front of goal and made no mistake, beating Evan Fitzpatrick through the five-hole to make it 4-0. The Blaze were handed their first power-play opportunity of the game at the 26-minute mark, with Dom Cormier sent to the penalty box for cross-checking. Coventry looked to use the man advantage to get themselves back into the game, but Sheffield stood firm. The visitors then added a fifth at 28:21, with Evan Jasper getting his name on the scoresheet, picking out the top corner of Fitzpatrick's net. The Blaze continued to battle in search of a way back into the contest, but Sheffield remained in control. Griffin Ness managed a good wraparound attempt in the third period, but the Blaze were unable to find a breakthrough. Sheffield then closed out the scoring with a sixth goal at 50:58 through Leevi Teissala to complete the night's scoring. The assist went to Great Britain International Robert Dowd and carried extra significance, drawing the Steelers captain level with Ron Shudra’s all-time club points record for the club.
