The Genting Casino Coventry Blaze fell to a 0-3 defeat to the Nottingham Panthers at Skydome Arena on New Year’s Day in the Elite League.
Despite a strong opening period and several powerplay opportunities. It was a frustrating evening for Blaze, who found themselves thwarted by an in-form Ryan Bednard between the Panthers’ pipes.
The first period saw Coventry dominate possession and apply pressure, including a near-minute of five-on-three advantage. Despite creating notable chances, including efforts from Jackson Cressey and Grayson Constable, Blaze couldn’t find a way past Bednard, who was impenetrable throughout.
Blaze’s momentum faltered in the second period, with the team struggling to capitalise on further chances. Mike Regush came close, but Bednard once again came up with a vital save as the period closed. Penalty trouble also disrupted Coventry’s rhythm, with infractions from Kim Tallberg and Brandon Alderson handing Nottingham momentum.
The game slipped away early in the third period when Zsombor Garát gave Panthers the lead at 41.07, finishing a feed from Didrik Henbrant. Blaze’s hopes dimmed further when Kristoff Kontos converted a three-on-one break at 49.28.
Despite pulling netminder Mat Robson for the extra skater late in the game, Blaze couldn’t find a breakthrough. Instead, Ollie Betteridge sealed the win for Panthers, scoring into the empty net at 59.23.
While Coventry showed flashes of offensive intent in front of a near sold out crowd, they’ll rue missed opportunities and a strong performance by Bednard, who stopped all 35 shots he faced.
