The Genting Casino Coventry Blaze suffered a 6-0 defeat to the Guildford Flames in the Challenge Cup at Spectrum on Saturday night.
Eamon McAdam recorded a 27-shot shutout and Guildford’s discipline, and clinical special teams made all the difference, with three of their goals coming on the powerplay.
The Flames took the lead at 4.05 when Travis Brown, assisted by Matt Alvaro and Robert Lachowicz, fired a powerplay goal into the net after a scramble in front of Mat Robson.
Guildford extended their control in the second period. Ryan Tait, set up by Daniel Tedesco and Kyle Locke, made it 2-0 at 21.36 with a close-range finish. Just six minutes later, Matt Alvaro slotted home a goal at 27.27, assisted by Josh Waller and Coughler, putting the Flames firmly in the driver’s seat at 3-0.
Coventry’s best chance of the period came on a breakaway, but McAdam remained unbeaten.
The third period saw Guildford seal the win with two quick goals just 23 seconds apart.
Alvaro netted his second of the night on the powerplay at 42.41 with helpers going to Tedesco and Coughler.
Moments later, Daniel Catenacci extended the lead to 5-0, assisted by Ben O’Connor and Ethan Strang at 43.04. The Flames added another powerplay goal at 45.58, with Tait scoring his second of the game, thanks to assists from Brett Ferguson and Tedesco which was his third of the night.
