The Genting Casino Coventry Blaze pulled away from the Fife Flyers in the third period to secure a 5-2 victory in the Elite League at the Skydome Arena on Sunday.
With Janis Voris suspended for instigating a goalie fight with Belfast Giants’ Jackson Whistle the night before, Fife turned to experienced Canadian Shane Owen for his first start since 12 January.
Owen was instrumental in keeping the Blaze at bay early on while the home side had Mat Robson and their penalty-killing units to thank for keeping the Flyers out on a four-minute-high sticking penalty to Nick Seitz.

Coventry eventually broke the deadlock at 9.59 after Kim Tallberg’s tenacious play forced a turnover. Estonian forward Morten Jurgens latched onto the loose puck and fired a shot past Owen to make it 1-0, with an assist from Grayson Constable.

The Flyers grew into the game and, after sustained offensive pressure, levelled the score at 16:01. Tyler Heidt beat Robson with a well-placed shot, assisted by Noah Delmas and Phelix Martineau.

Blaze regained their lead at 24.27 through a decisive passing move, with Alessio Luciani finishing off the play assisted by Seitz and Brandon Alderson.

However, Fife responded swiftly, making it 2-2 at 28.17 when Michael Cichy found himself free in front of the net, using his skill to convert past Robson on the powerplay.

Both teams had powerplay opportunities to close out the second period and begin the third, but it was Coventry who took advantage. After Chase Gresock was tripped on a prime scoring opportunity at 45.15, he took just 17 seconds on the powerplay to capitalise, netting the go-ahead goal at 47.23. Assists were credited to Mike Regush and Terrance Amorosa.

Just 35 seconds later, Coventry extended their advantage to 4-2 at 48.15. Defenceman Alexander Kuqali drove towards the net and slotted the puck past Owen, assisted by Jackson Cressey and Alderson.

Fife pulled Owen for the extra skater at 58.39, but there was to be no repeat of their heroic comeback against the Giants the night before.
Instead, Coventry sealed the victory with an empty-net goal at 59.17. Regush registered his second assist of the night and his league leading 29th of the season, setting up Gresock, who calmly found the back of the net for his second goal of the game.

British defenceman Archie Hazeldine collected the Man of the Match award, earning over 15 minutes of ice time while Mike Kennedy picked up the Frame and Print Player of the Month award for January 2025.
